Praying through Proverbs, Chapter 23 – Envy

Dear Heavenly Father,

We’ve seen others act in dishonest and deceitful ways in order to achieve a quick gain. It’s tempting to envy their seemingly easy lifestyle choices and successes but we want to uphold Your Word.

Help us not to feel jealous of others, including those who are living sinful lifestyles (Proverbs 24:1-2). We know we will eventually reap what we sow and we want to do all for Your glory (Colossians 3:23-25). Help us to find our joy and comfort in You, and not in earthly things.

Please guide us so we can encourage each other in godliness and contentment, whether in richer or poorer, as we journey through life together.

In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long. For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off. Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way. Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags. – Proverbs 23:17-21, KJV

Do not let your heart envy sinners, but always be zealous for the fear of the Lord. There is surely a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off. Listen, my son, and be wise, and set your heart on the right path: Do not join those who drink too much wine or gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes them in rags. – Proverbs 23:17-21, NIV
