Praying through First Samuel, Chapter 13 – Following Our Hearts

I’m excited to share this 31-day marriage prayer series hosted by my friend and fellow blogger, Davonne Parks, The Tidy Mom. The series is taking place here at for the entire month of October.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Our culture, including many Christians, talk about following our hearts. They say our hearts will lead us. So we think that if something is on our heart, You must have put it there.

But Your word speaks contrarily. Your word warns us to, “Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived” (Deuteronomy 11:16, NKJV).

And we see in 1st Samuel 13:7-14 that Saul “felt compelled” to offer the burnt offerings when Samuel didn’t return at the appointed time. Samuel’s reprimand came as a shock because Saul was trying to make a good decision, but he did it by letting his heart lead instead of listening to instruction, and he was forced to face the consequences because of it.

Likewise, Paul followed his heart and thought he was pleasing You when he persecuted Christians (Acts 26:9-11). We can plainly see that he was very wrong.

But when it comes to our own lives, we’re less inclined to see the truth when our hearts are deceiving us. Because we so desperately want to believe that the things we long for are in keeping with Your will for our lives.

Lord, we’re asking You for wisdom. Show us when we’re being led astray by our hearts. Help us to actively seek truth by studying Your word and making prayer a continual part of our lives (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

“[Saul said], Therefore said I, The Philistines will come down now upon me to Gilgal, and I have not made supplication unto the Lord: I forced myself therefore, and offered a burnt offering. And Samuel said to Saul, Thou hast done foolishly: thou hast not kept the commandment of the Lord thy God, which he commanded thee…” 1 Samuel 13:12-13, KJV

“[Saul replied], ‘I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will come down against me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the Lord’s favor.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.’ ‘You have done a foolish thing,’ Samuel said. ‘You have not kept the command the Lord your God gave you…'” 1 Samuel 13:12-13, NIV
