Praying through Proverbs, Chapter 31 – The Virtuous Wife

Wife’s Prayer for Her Virtue

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for allowing me the honor of being a wife. Please mold me into a woman my husband can be proud of because I want to help him feel blessed, not burdened, as we journey through life together.

You know when I’m doing my best and when I’m secretly eating the bread of idleness (Proverbs 31:27). Help me to avoid laziness, unkind words, and anything else that is preventing me from properly caring for my loved ones and my home.

Forgive me for the times I’ve spoken and acted in selfish manners that have fallen desperately short of Your desires for me. I want to resist the cultural norm of belittling others – especially my spouse – and to instead allow kindness to flow freely from my lips (Proverbs 31:26).

Help me to joyfully live out Your will for me and to trust that You have a glorious plan and a beautiful purpose for my life.

In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Husband’s Prayer for His Wife’s Virtue

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you for the gift of my wife. Please help me to continually see her for the beautiful treasure that she is (Colossians 3:19). Guide me so I can lead my family and cherish my wife in a way that will make it easy for her to honor her vows (Ephesians 5:25-28).

I want to be the husband she needs as we experience life together and grow closer to You. Help me to express appreciation for the works she does in our home so she won’t feel as if her efforts are invisible.

Search my heart and show me any ways my words or actions have hurt her in the past so I’ll know how to do better the next time (Psalm 139:23-24).

Help me to support my wife’s dreams, to encourage her benevolent efforts, and to be an encouragement and a safety net for her so she always knows she has a safe refuge in my arms.

In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil…. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. – Proverbs 31:10-11, 27-30, KJV

A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value… She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: “Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all.” Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. – Proverbs 31:10-11, 27-30, NIV
