Marriage Prayer – To Bridle Our Tongues
Dear Heavenly Father,
Teach us to bridle our tongues, Lord. To bring them under subjection to Your Spirit so that we might speak wisely and well.
Your Word tells us that sin doesn’t end with the multiplying words, but the wise hold their tongues. And yet it’s a lesson that’s so hard to learn, as we live in a world that strives to have the last word, and to prove themselves right.
Remind us often that it’s more important to fight for our marriage than it is to fight to be right. Teach us to step back when we want to step up and be heard. Lead us as we seek to offer words of encouragement and grace. Help us to restrain ourselves when we’re feeling negative, and to weigh our thoughts before they come tumbling out.
Forgive us for all of the careless and thoughtless words that we’ve said. Help us also to forgive and to extend grace to each other.
In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
