Teach Us to Speak Kindly at Home—Today's Marriage Prayer
Dear heavenly Father,
Sometimes it’s the people we love the most who hear us at our worst. We hold our tongue with a customer who’s difficult. We answer politely when someone interrupts us. We smile through frustrating moments because we know it’s the right thing to do. Then we come home, let our guard down, and the people who matter most can end up receiving the least patient version of us.
Father, forgive us for those times.
Help us remember that home should be the place where kindness is practiced most often. When we’re tired, remind us to be gentle. When we’re frustrated, help us slow down before we speak. And when we’ve had a hard day, give us the wisdom not to hand our burdens to each other through careless words.
Teach us to make our home a place where encouragement comes easily and where grace is never hard to find. Help us notice when our spouse needs understanding more than an opinion, a listening ear more than an answer, or simply the reassurance that they’re deeply loved.
Lord, thank You for the incredible gift of sharing life with someone who knows us so well. We don’t want familiarity to make us careless. Instead, let it deepen our love, our respect, and the way we speak to one another. May the kindest words we speak each day be spoken within the walls of our own home.
