A Marriage That Guards the Tongue

A Marriage That Guards the Tongue — Today’s Marriage Prayer

Dear heavenly Father,

We come before You knowing how powerful our words can be. A sentence spoken too quickly, a tone shaped by frustration, or silence held too long—each one has the ability to either build up or tear down. And too often, we fall short.

Teach us to be careful with what we say.

Your Word reminds us to be quick to listen and slow to speak, yet we confess how easily we reverse that. We speak before we understand. We react before we pray. We let emotions lead, instead of allowing Your Spirit to guide our hearts.

Lord, we ask that You would place a guard over our mouths. Shape our words so they reflect kindness, patience, and truth. When we are tempted to speak out of anger, give us the strength to pause. When we feel unheard, help us to respond with grace instead of sharpness.

Create in us a desire to speak life into our marriage.

Let our conversations be marked by encouragement and honesty, not criticism or carelessness. Teach us to listen with humility, to respond with gentleness, and to forgive quickly when words have caused hurt.

Draw us closer to Christ, that our hearts would be transformed—and from that transformation, our words would follow. May our home be filled with speech that honors You and strengthens the bond we share.

In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

Today’s Bible Verse

Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: — James 1:19, KJV

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry. James 1:19, NIV
