A Marriage That Practices Self-Control — Today’s Marriage Prayer
Dear heavenly Father,
We come before You knowing how easily our emotions can take the lead. In moments of stress, frustration, or hurt, we can react quickly instead of responding with wisdom. And too often, those reactions leave a mark.
Teach us self-control.
Not as a matter of willpower alone, but as the work of Your Spirit within us. Help us to pause before we speak, to think before we act, and to bring our thoughts under Your truth instead of letting them run unchecked.
Lord, we ask that You would steady our hearts.
When anger rises, slow us down.
When impatience builds, remind us to wait.
When we feel overwhelmed, lead us to rest in You rather than react.
Give us strength to choose what is right.
To respond with gentleness when tension grows.
To hold back words that would wound.
To walk in discipline, even when it feels difficult.
Shape our marriage with this kind of restraint.
Not silence or distance, but wisdom that knows when to speak and when to hold back. Let self-control protect what You are building between us, guarding our words, our attitudes, and our actions.
Draw us closer to Christ, who walked in perfect obedience and showed us what it means to live with purpose and discipline. May His example guide us as we grow together.
In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
