Help Us Be Mindful of Our Words

Help Us Be Mindful of Our Words — Today's Marriage Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Sometimes it’s not just what we say—but how we say it—that makes all the difference. Help us be mindful of our words, and just as important, our tone. Teach us to pause before we speak, to listen more than we react, and to speak in ways that reflect Your love.

So often, it’s in the small moments—the quick answers, the sighs, the way we phrase a sentence—that tension begins to build. We don’t want to let careless words chip away at something sacred. Remind us to speak gently, especially when it’s hard. Let kindness and respect shape our conversations, even when we disagree.

When frustration rises or misunderstandings happen, give us the humility to own our part—whether it’s a sharp word, a cold response, or something we left unsaid. Help us to apologize quickly and forgive freely, knowing we both fall short and we both need grace.

Grow us in patience, honesty, and compassion. And when we mess up, help us learn from it—together. We want our marriage to reflect You—even in the little things.

In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.Ephesians 4:29, NIV
