The Courage To Face A Critical Spirit –
Today’s Marriage Prayer

The Courage To Face A Critical Spirit

Dear Heavenly Father,

It’s so easy to find fault, to look for the worst in each other, and to dwell on past mistakes.

What’s not always easy is recognizing a critical spirit within ourselves and gaining control over it before it’s too late.

A critical spirit will grow, and if left unchecked, will cause untold damage to our marriage. It has the potential to break down the love and respect we’ve worked hard to build.

We don’t want to point fingers, we don’t want to criticize, and we don’t want to nag, but sometimes that ugly behavior finds a way in.

And so we ask that You open our eyes as we examine our hearts. Give us the courage to face this spirit head-on. If it is a part of the way that we think, help us to take all thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ.
We ask that you would help us to see the good in our spouse and to focus on their strengths rather than their weaknesses, and remind us to always give thanks for the good that we find. Help us to always act with kindness and grace.

In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Today’s Bible Verse

Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the mote out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye. – Matthew 7:1-5, KJV

______________________________

Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. – Matthew 7:1-5, NIV
