The Words We Speak

The Words We Speak – Today’s
Marriage Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father,

Your Word teaches us that the words we speak can either wound or heal, encourage or discourage. May we make it our aim to bridle our tongues, Lord. To bring them under subjection to Your Spirit so that we might speak wisely and well. Your Word tells us that sin doesn’t end with the multiplying words, but the wise hold their tongues. And yet it’s a lesson that’s so hard to learn, as we live in a world that strives to have the last word and to prove themselves right.

Remind us often that it’s more important to fight for our marriage than it is to fight to be right. Teach us to step back when we feel the need to step up and be heard. Lead us as we seek to offer words of encouragement and grace. Help us to restrain ourselves when we’re feeling negative, and to control our thoughts before careless words come tumbling out.

Forgive us for all of the careless and thoughtless words that we’ve said. Help us also to forgive and to extend grace to one another as You have forgiven and extended Your grace to us.

In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Today’s Bible Verse

Whoever hides hatred has lying lips, And whoever spreads slander is a fool. In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise. – Proverbs 10:19, KJV
